Entry to Japan

Japan is easing travel restrictions, but most travellers for tourism remain unable to enter at this stage. You can enter if you have, or are eligible to obtain, a valid Japanese visa. This includes the following:

  • Japan has announced that from 10 June, the entry of foreign tourists will resume in stages. This will initially be limited to guided and organised tours, only from countries listed as “blue” (low risk). Australia is listed as a blue country. If you’re travelling from a country classified as “yellow” or “red” you may not be able to enter. The company organising your tour will sponsor your application for a visa to enter Japan. The visa-waiver program that previously existed for Australians is still suspended. For more information visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or contact your nearest Japanese Embassy or Consulate for more information.
  • (We will provide the Sponsor Letter for Japan Tourist Visa application purpose)

Countries have been separated into three groups depending on the level of risk: Blue, Yellow and Red. Australia is in the “blue” category. On-arrival testing and quarantine requirements will be different if you have travelled from a country in the “red” or “yellow” category.

Travellers from Australia whose vaccinations are up to date, have received a booster and can present a vaccination certificate no longer need to undertake an on-arrival test or quarantine/isolate upon arrival in Japan.

You must present a negative COVID-19 (PCR or quantitative antigen) test result taken within 72 hours of departure for Japan. The 72 hours starts from the sampling time to departure time of the flight. Test result certificates can be in English. The certificates must include all the information contained in the sample on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. The certificate must include the signature of the doctor/clinician.

You’ll be denied entry into Japan if you’re unable to provide evidence of a negative pre-departure test result. Airlines have been asked to deny boarding if you’re unable to produce a negative certificate. If you are travelling from a “red” country you’re also required to undergo a COVID-19 test on arrival. Japan does not recognise recovery from a prior infection as proof of negative COVID-19 status.

You’ll need to make a “Written Pledge” and may be asked to install MySOS, a video call and location-based app, onto your smart phone upon arrival. This will be used for contact tracing.

You must complete a health questionnaire from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare prior to travelling to Japan. The completed questionnaire generates a QR code that you’ll need to present upon arrival.
